Change recovery settings (optional)
The default is any 3 of 5 keys. You can use trusted people and safe places; you do not need five different people.
Optional: adds one encrypted recovery contribution. Needs at least three keys to open and leaves enough family keys to recover without Lastnote. You will activate it when setting up family recovery.
Use your passkey day to day. Keep these backup keys yourself, in separate safe places. Changing this choice after setup requires replacement keys.
For family recovery, we’ll prepare five keys; any three can open your saved copy. People or safe places can keep them. You can change this arrangement above before saving.
Add a title and a note or file above, or choose “Use a fictional example”, to continue.
Create one passkey, then use it again to check that your information opens. Some browsers need one extra confirmation to protect it. These prompts use the same passkey. Next, save your private recovery kit. You can arrange family access later.
A copy you can keep
Your recovery kit lets you open your saved copy with enough recovery keys, even without Lastnote. Keep the encrypted file and the original keys.

Save and check a recovery copy
Ready to save. This file contains your latest saved copy; unsaved edits are not included.
Save recovery kitKeep your keys before leaving
Your first kit includes the original recovery keys. This page cannot recreate that key file after a reload. Select the saved ZIP below so we can check it is complete.
Check the file you saved
Choose the recovery ZIP from your downloads or backup folder. Its contents stay in this browser; the selected file is not uploaded.
A matching file is not a recovery test or confirmation that your family can reach it. Keep the original recovery keys separately. Check again after saving changes.
